Tupã is a name of mythological Indian origin, meaning in the Tupi language "the thunder".

Many people confuse the name Tupã as being the superior deity within the Tupi-Guarani culture. In reality, this idea was incorporated by the Jesuits, during the Portuguese colonization and catechization period, when they witnessed the Indians fearing the noise of the thunder, since the phenomenon was something unknown to them, being associated with the divine or mystical.

The supreme Tupi-Guarani god, however, is Nhanderuvuçú (old soul in the Tupi language), also known as Nhamandú.

According to the legend, after Nhanderuvuçú created the souls and the waters (Iara), he created Tupã, responsible for controlling the weather, the climate and the winds. That is why the indigenous people feared the sounds of thunder and lightning, because they thought it was Tupã manifesting himself negatively about something or a bad omen.
